Number Bond Story Mats

I have been trying to figure out the best way to transition from addition fluency to 5 to subtraction fluency to 5. After a lot of thought, I believe using number bonds (thinking addition to figure out subtraction) is the way I am going. I'll let you know if it works out.

Anyways, I created these Number Bond Mats to help with this transition of addition to subtraction... plus we need to work on story problems. Click the pictures below to go to my TPT store to purchase for $1.50

Ways to make 5 Freebies

Last week in math I started with fluency to 5 but introduced it as ways of making 5. I saw this cute idea from The Littlest Scholars and ran with it.

First I just reviewed the rainbow with no number sentences. I wanted them to just remember what numbers went together before we put them into number sentences.

Then we would play a game where I would say 1 and they would say "1 and 4 makes 5". We continued on with that game. I would then cover up two numbers with my hands and they would have to tell me what two numbers go together to make 5.

At my small group table I made number cards 0-5 and they put them in order. Then we practiced whole body movement of covering the numbers with our hands and saying the numbers  (0 & 5, 1 & 4, 2& 3) then we would say them backwards (3 & 2, 4 & 1, 5 & 0). I loved how they were able to practice remembering the numbers but also saw a pattern to where they are at on a number line. Again someone would cover two numbers and we would guess whats under the hands.

We then went on to putting them into number sentences. We played memory with number sentences and "Oh, No!".

Then I made a making 5 puzzle game that I can put it into a station for students to match and write the addition sentence.

Cause and Effect Differentiated Card Game

Hope everyone is enjoying the SUPERBOWL. Honestly, I just watch it for the commercials. How about everyone else?

Well we woke up this morning to a little bit of snow here in Tennessee and the kids were beyond excited. Unfortunately, it will be gone by lunch.

Valentine's Day Build and Measure

We have been working on measurement and I needed a really fun activity to explain WHY it is important to measure correctly. So the wheels were turning and I thought with Valentine's Day coming up, why not have them make something using measurement.

This is what I came up with... Students will create a picture frame for a loved one but they will have to measure using a "Lovebird Ruler" and then build or glue it together ;)

Missing in Action!!! Weather Cause & Effect Freebie

First and foremost.... I am so sorry for my lack of creating and posting. OMG! I didnt realize my first year in Kindergarten would be so exhausting and demanding. I have to say, Kindergarten is something different on its own and I have a new appreciation for all you kinder teachers. :) Since I have taught first for a few years, I thought... It cant be that much different. Ha, was I wrong.

Anyways, so much has gone on but I dont have enough to time to catch up so I'm starting from here. We have had the craziest weather this winter in Tennessee. Last week was our first "snow day" for ice and today being our second "snow day" due to tornadic weather. My two kids 9 and 5, to say the least were frightened that I had woke them up at 3am. We are all safe, but very scary being in our safe place and feeling the whole house shake.

1 Year Bloggiversary with freebie

OMG! I can not believe I have been at this for a year. I have learned so much and became a better teacher because of you all. SO THANK YOU!



Here is a little freebie I have been working on this week for my amazing Kindergarten coworkers. There are WBT Rules posters, cards for students to put into pockets for breaking the rule, super student cards for students going above and beyond, and a weekly parent communication sheet. (graphics are from Scrappin Doodle, border from Graphics From The Pond)

Here is another freebie I have been working on. It goes along with WBT for the Super Improvers Wall. (I wish I had a finished picture to show you, but its not all hung up yet) The idea is the students will each have a set of these 10 point star cards on a circle ring. When they improve in ANYTHING being academics or behavior they add a star sticker to the star point. When all ten points are filled they take that home and start working on the next level. In addition on this ring is a half pipe cleaner. They get to add the same color bead to their pipe cleaner. At the end of the year they have a cute key chain to take home, hopefully filled with beads.

Daily 5 chapter 5 read to someone

Sorry for the delay in continuing my posts with the Daily 5. I have been caught up in back to school stuff.
How many of you are guilty of saying "read to yourself quietly?" I know I am. Now, there's this concept of read to someone. What was I thinking for hushing my kiddos when they wanted to talk to someone about there book. Read to someone allows students to hear fluent and expression from others. Plus what a great way to get them talking about a book. Like everything else in D5, read to someone needs to be modeled over and over.
I get the EEKK model, sharing the same book. One student read one page the other read the other page and checking each other for understanding after each page. However one thing I loved about this chapter was where the sisters said students at different reading levels can read their own books to each other. I love this concept but I would be lost reading a page from my book, and then listen to Johnny read a page from his book, and so on.  What are your thoughts on this?

Voice level is always a concern for me when students read to someone. Last year I used voice level poster and it really helped. These will go  back up and be refered to the daily.

I found a really cute book that would be a great lesson on voice level. It's called "Holler Loudly" by Cynthia Leitich Smith. It basically tells a story about a boy that is so loud and everyone tells him to hush, but when the town is in danger he hollers loudly and the town realizes its ok to be loud sometimes and quiet at other times.

I like how the sisters used the demonstration of everyone yelling out "I need a partner." Their respons was- a quiet hand raised signals you need a partner, make eye contact with another person whose hand is raised, and ask in polite voices to be partners. Love it!
Read to someone seems like a pretty simple concept, I hope now I can execute it correctly. Any tips I may need that you veteran D5 teachers have?
